Wireless Router Security
If you are using a wireless router you will find this very important.
The Problem
If you do not "secure" your router from hackers, they can use your bandwidth to upload and download illegal files and adult content. Things such as porn and child porn "may" be linked (and on unprotected computers, even downloaded) to your computer and even though nothing may be found on your computer(s) it can cause you lots of embarrassment and potentially a huge loss to your business and professional credibility.
The Solution
Firstly, log into your Router Config and change the user name and password.
You Must log in to change these details. The access IP addresses are usually one of the following however, please check your router user manual if you cannot get in using either of these. 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.0
This will stop someone else logging into your router and setting up their own username and password.
The default;
user name: admin
password: admin
2. DO NOT use common or dictionary names for your password, make your password AT LEAST 8 characters long and try putting something on the end of the word like ZZ (who would think of that???)
3. Next click on the START button > click RUN and type in CMD
you will get a black DOS window pop up
Now type in IPCONFIG
This will tell you THAT computers IP address - disregard everything else 9see picture below)
Write this down and repeat with every computer in your office / even laptops
After you log in you will need to look for either ACCESS RESTRICTIONS or SECURITY then go to INTERNET ACCESS.

Enable a new account, Name it (Create an ID) and enter all of the List of Computers you have. Most systems allow you to set up multiple accounts.
REMEMBER to SAVE SETTINGS
The following is an example as seen on the LinkSys WAG 54G

If this is too confusing, please contact the ESDGP 02 9389 0874

Remove Spyware
Every time you visit a website you run the risk of having a virus or trojan downloaded to your computer. Whenever you open or set up any software program on your computer, you run the risk of having a virus or trojan downloaded to your computer.
Some anti virus software (like PC-Cillin) have built in Anti-Spyware and Anti-Malware.
Otherwise you can download independant programs like the following;
LavaSoft (most popular and a free version is available)
Spybot-Search-Destroy (may conflict with your anti-virus software)
Keep an eye out for the next generation called GreenBorder (recently bought out by Google) and should be soon available commercially.

Download and installation instructions are also available from this site.
The wording displayed on the prompt for patients under 65 years of age that meet the criteria for an Influenza vaccination is NOT correct in the February MD2.82 cd and should be as follows:
This patient meets the N.H.M.R.C. criteria for vaccination against Influenza. Would you like to update the immunisation record now?
Note: It is the wording on the prompt that is incorrect not the functionality of the prompt. A patch is now available.
Software Training
Divisional IT Assistance
The Division can provide on site support to assist practices with planning, selecting, implementing and configuring computer hardware and software.
If you require training in Medical Director, Pracsoft, Monet or any other software packages, please let us know.
Please contact the Division on 9389-0874 to organise a practice visit or training specific to your Practice's needs.
Installation
Installing computer hardware and software can improve practice efficiency and effectiveness if properly planned, implemented, maintained and utilised, otherwise it can be just a waste of money and space.
The list below can seem daunting, but the Division can assist you with implementation and training to provide you with a level of confidence in your decision making.
| Cost/Benefit Analysis Some potential Benefits: |
- Access to Practice Incentive Payment for Computer/Clinical software use.
- Faster production of repeat scripts for patients
- Automatic generation of history and summaries
- Automated recall reminders
- Faster referrals
- Improved risk management through warnings on drug contraindications and interactions
- Improved risk management through the ability to retain backup copies of medical records off site.
- Integration with Government initiatives in electronic payment and reporting which facilitates faster payment processing.
- Online access to diagnostic results with fast and reliable review and assignment to patient records.
|
|
| |
| Some potential costs: |
- Initial cost of hardware, software and infrastructure setup
- Time to set up or amend practice procedures
- Cost (time and money) for training GPs and staff in operation and support of equipment and systems.
- Ongoing cost of maintenance and upgrade.
- Contingency plan for hardware, software outages.
- Planning the Implementation
- Space requirements
- Power requirements
- Computer hardware requirements
- Computer software requirements
- Network cabling requirements
- Obtaining quotes
- Developing operational procedures
- Developing maintenance procedures, including backups
- Developing a contingency plan (loss of data, loss of hardware, loss of premises)
- Training plan
- Implementation schedule and timetable
|
|
| |
| Implementation |
- It is suggested that a single supplier should be responsible for full implementation.
- They should supply, install, carry out the basic configuration and set the equipment to work.
- You should then ensure that it meets your requirements before signing off.
- While there is an implied warranty on works carried out, a written warranty which will ensure that any outstanding implementation problems are rectified should be obtained.
- Using a single supplier responsible for full implementation at this phase will assist in avoiding "finger pointing" between suppliers.
|
|
| |
| Maintenance |
|
A separate maintenance contract should be taken out. This may be with the original supplier or with another party specialising in support of GP practice systems.
This may be on the basis of an annual fee which may cover a priority on site service with a limited number of hours service included, an agreed hourly rate for onsite service, or a combination of the two.
This should cover on site repair/ replacement of hardware, and a help desk service for operating system problems. Your clinical/practice software suppliers should provide a help desk service for problems related specifically to their software.
|
|
| |
| Operation (Using the System) |
|
To achieve the maximum benefit from your new system and reduce risk you will need to be aware of the features and functionality of the system you have implemented. Functional Backup procedures are most important.
Standard Procedures also need to be implemented to ensure consistency in application and use across the Practice.
