Stop Smoking

How stupid are smokers ?

There is a difference between being Smart and being Intelligent.

There is not 1 intelligent thing associated with smoking.

  • The money you spend on 1 packet of cigarettes a day, when applied to your mortgage with the right mortgage reduction plan, can reduce up to 5 years OFF your mortgage payments.*
  • 2 packets a day can reduce up to 7 years off mortgage payments (with the correct structure)*
  • Smokers can spend UP TO $1,000 (or more as they get older) a year on their income protection policies (conditions do apply) *
  • Smoke impregnated suits and clothes need to be cleaned more often. (another expense)
  • Smoking dramatically increases your chance of;
    • having a Stroke
    • getting gangrene
    • getting mouth, throat and or lung cancers
    • Often spending up to the last 10 years of your life wearing a nappy, with Zero quality of life being catered for by nursing staff
    • having an accident while driving, due to;
      • ash in your eye(s)
      • dropping the cigarette or the burning bit into your lap while driving
      • being distracted while lighting the cigarette
  • Smoking may not be the stupidest thing you will do in your life, but then again, maybe it is.

Smokers cost the economy Billions of dollars a year due to their constant popping out for a cigarette often spending 10 or more minutes per session and doing this an average of 5 times per day.

Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of death and disease in Australia and is responsible for killing approx 50 Australians daily, approx 350 each week, and approx 19,000 every year.

Smokers are personally responsible for higher taxes.
Smoking causes 20% of all cancers, 21% of all heart disease and cost over $21 billion a year (2002 report *1) in health care and related lost productivity and other associated costs.

The decline in the adult smoking rate has stalled on around 25% of the population, with smoking rates of women showing the least decline and rates of smoking amongst indigenous Australians remaining well above the national average.

Smoking rates of children are rising after a decade of decline during the 1980s. The prevalence of smoking among minors in ‘the past week', was 28% and 31% of 17 year old boys and girls respectively.

A child who starts smoking aged 14 years, is 5 times more likely to die from lung cancer than someone who began smoking at 24, and 15 times more likely to die from lung cancer than someone who has never smoked (Doran, Girgis, Sanson-Fisher, 1998 Australian Journal of Public Health vol22 no3).

The study estimated the gross costs in Australia of treating major diseases attributable to smoking to be around $2.25 billion.

Results from a recent study published in the Medical Journal of Australia predict a one percent drop in smoking prevalence could save about $20.4 million in health care costs.

Smoking causes more deaths than from car accidents, AIDS and all other deaths combined. (ABS 1998)

Since our establishment in 1985, there has been considerable progress in reducing the harm that tobacco causes in our community. For example, Victoria's smoking rates have fallen substantially in both men and women. Other advances include legislation to protect people from second-hand smoke, phasing out most cigarette advertising, banning of smoking in workplaces, and exposing tobacco industry practices. These have been achieved through the efforts of many parties, but much more needs to be achieved.

The Tobacco Control Unit (TCU), which is a joint initiative of The Cancer Council Victoria, VicHealth, Department of Human Services and the National Heart Foundation. It includes the VicHealth Centre for Tobacco Control (VCTC) and Quit Victoria.
